Duke student and Green Hope grad hits halfcourt shot to win $19,000 :: WRALSportsFan.com
Durham, N.C. — A Duke student from Cary is $19,000 richer after hitting a halfcourt shot on ESPN’s College Gameday.
Raphael Lee, a Green Hope High School graduate, won the prize after a few attempts and hit nothing but net Saturday morning ahead of the first round of the Battle of the Blues between Duke and rival UNC.
There were 19 seconds allotted for Lee to hit a shot and the amount represented the approximate 19,000 State Farm agents across the country.
Former Duke star and ESPN analyst Jay Williams erupted in jubilation and hugged Lee to celebrate. He was presented with a giant oversized check as family and friends watched.
Lee is a junior studying biology.
Lee predicted a blowout win for Duke in light of his good fortune. It was an accurate prediction as Duke led by as many as 32 in the second half before winning 87-70.
Lee told ESPN’s Chris Fowler he would use the money for spring break and help his brother with student loans.
