Apex promotes Rob Fronk to head football coach

Apex High School did not look far to find its next head football coach. The Cougars promoted offensive coordinator Rob Fronk to take over the program.

The school announced the move on social media, saying that Fronk “represents the PEAK of Great Athletics” and will honor the many years of Apex football tradition.

Fronk is taking over the position from John Mozerka, who announced he was leaving in December. He had remained on to lead the program through a big college recruiting period.

He is an alumni of Apex and went on to play football at NC State.

Apex is coming off of a 5-5 overall finish in 2024. The Cougars missed the state playoffs.

This school year, Apex has an average daily membership of 2,481 students. That number means the Cougars will become an 8A program once the N.C. High School Athletic Associaiton officially realings into eight classifications later this year.

That enrollment number could change with the opening of Felton Grove High School this year. Felton Grove could pull students from Apex as well as Apex Friendship and Middle Creek High Schools.

Apex was placed in an 8A-only league with Apex Friendship, Green Hope, Green Level, Jordan, Panther Creek, and Willow Spring in the second draft of new conferences that was released by the NCHSAA. These conference plans are subject to change following the appeals period.

The Cougars are searching for their first regional final appearance and state championship in program history.
