Starmount state champion football coach Joe Hutchens dies
A legendary figure from Starmount High School has passed away.
On Jan. 12, Starmount’s football accounts on social media shared that former head coach Joe Hutchens died. He was 67 years old.
Hutchens will never be forgotten by the Starmount community. The coach led the Rams to a 1A state championship in 1998. The Rams defeated North Edgecombe by a score of 22-20 in the title game. It was Starmount’s first state championship in any sport.
In this seven seasons as the Rams’ head coach, he amassed a win-loss record of 74-21. Starmount won three conference championships under his leadership. His teams posted 25 shutouts.
