NC State’s Wilson earns AP award as ACC’s top defensive player :: WRALSportsFan.com
Rewritten: Written by sports journalist, AARON BEARD from the Associated Press.
Jordan Travis, the quarterback for Florida State, has been named The Associated Press’ offensive player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina State’s linebacker, Payton Wilson, has been unanimously chosen as the top defensive player in the league for the 2023 season.
The fourth-ranked Seminoles received multiple accolades, including head coach Mike Norvell being named coach of the year and Michigan State transfer receiver Keon Coleman being recognized as the top newcomer in the conference. Additionally, 13 FSU players were selected for the AP’s All-ACC first and second teams by a panel of 14 media members covering the conference.
Wilson and Travis were selected as the honorees in All-ACC voting by the league.
After winning their first ACC championship since 2014, the Seminoles (13-0) were not selected for the four-team College Football Playoff due to Travis’ injury in the late season.
Last year, Travis was chosen as the second-string quarterback, with North Carolina’s Drake Maye receiving the offensive player of the year award. This year, their positions have been switched, with Travis being unanimously selected as the first-string quarterback and Maye being chosen as the second-string on all 14 ballots.
Travis, who scored 27 touchdowns, was selected as a unanimous first-team pick alongside Wilson, a running back from North Carolina, and Washington, a receiver from Virginia. Wilson had the fifth highest number of tackles per game in the Bowl Subdivision with an average of 11.5. Hampton ranked fifth in rushing with 120.2 yards and Washington ranked second in receiving with 118.8 yards.
The number of All-ACC selections for FSU, which included Coleman being chosen as both a receiver and an all-purpose player, was more than double the number for UNC and Miami (six each), the teams with the next highest totals.
Both No. 16 Louisville and Duke received four All-ACC selections, despite Louisville’s loss to FSU in the ACC championship.
