Western Alamance girls continue to roll with win over Cedar Ridge
ELON, N.C. – Late in Tuesday night’s second quarter against Cedar Ridge, Western Alamance’s suffocating full-court pressure forced a turnover as the Red Wolves attempted to cross the time stripe.
Allie Sykes quickly answered with a step-back three from the wing. It kick-started three straight steals and three straight threes for the Lenoir-Rhyne signee.
That kind of play was the story of the Warriors’ 64-11 win, and their 12-2 start to the season. Sykes recorded two personal 9-0 runs to finish with a game-high 23.
Half of Western’s roster is made up of freshmen and sophomores. The team’s six seniors have set the tone this year by averaging over 45 of the team’s 55 points per contest.
Emma Johnson complimented Sykes’ first quarter threes with a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line to establish a 28-4 lead after one.
The Warriors efficient ball movement opened up driving lanes for Tina Bowers, a Western Carolina recruit, who scored 7 of her 10 in the second period.
As a team, Western Alamance drained eight shots from beyond the arc. The Warriors also knocked down 13 of their 14 foul shots in the contest.
Kennedi Fearrington scored 7 to lead Cedar Ridge. The Red Wolves were held without a field goal in a second half that exclusively featured a running clock.
Western Alamance is now 4-0 in conference play and heads to Person on Friday night. Cedar Ridge dropped to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play, the Red Wolves host Williams on Friday.
