Braxton Berrios to return to Leesville Road for jersey retirement

Miami Dolphins wide receiver and kick returner Braxton Berrios will return to Raleigh later this month as Leesville Road High School retires his jersey.

The jersey retirement ceremony will take place between the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games against Sanderson on Friday, Jan. 24.

Berrios, a member of Leesville Road’s Class of 2014, was one of the most decorated football players while at Leesville Road. A four-year varsity player, he amassed 5,666 yards on offense, including 77 touchdowns. He also scored five touchdown on defense or special teams.

In each of his four seasons, Berrios was named to the all-conference team. He was the conference Special Teams Player of the Year in 2011 and the conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2012.

As a senior, Berrios was selected to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and the Under Armour All-American Game.

ESPN rated Berrios as four-star prospect out of high school, and he was a member of the ESPN 300 — which identifies the top 300 high school football players in the country.

During his senior season, Berrios announced his commitment to Miami. He chose the Hurricanes over Clemson, Tennessee, Ohio State, South Carolina, Oregon, and West Virginia.

Berrios played all four years at Miami. As a senior, helped the Hurricanes in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He caught 55 passes for 679 yards and nine touchdowns. He was also the primary punt returner.

As a senior, Berrios was named the ACC’s Jim Tatum Award winner, which honors the league’s top scholar-athlete. He was a third-team All-ACC selection as a wide receiver and was an All-ACC Honorable Mention selection on special teams. He was also award the Pop Warner College Football Award.

The New England Patriots drafted Berrios in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the 210th overall pick. He was placed on injured reserve that season, but he was awarded a Super Bowl Ring after the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

After the Patriots waived Berrios the following summer, he was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. He scored his first career NFL touchdown with the Jets on a 30-yard reception against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Associated Press selected Berrios to its NFL All-Pro Team in 2021.

Berrios re-signed with the Jets in 2022, inking a two-year, $12 million contract. However, he was released by the Jets in March 2023. Shortly thereafter, he signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. He played in all 16 games for the Dolphins in 2023, catching 27 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to the 2024 season, Berrios re-signed with the Dolphins. However, he is currently on injured reserve after tearing his ACL against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7.
