A defensive assistant coach who spent the last three seasons at North Carolina will be NC State’s new co-defensive coordinator, the school announced Thursday.

Charlton Warren will coach safeties and nickels. He replaces Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay on the NC State staff. Aughtry-Lindsay was announced as the Wolfpack’s co-defensive coordinator on Dec. 30, but is leaving for another position.

Warren was the Tar Heels’ co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 2022 to 2024. He added the title of assistant head coach for defense in 2024.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the unbelievable culture of toughness that Coach Doeren has built at NC State,” Warren said in a statement.

NC State’s coaching staff will have a lot of new faces in head coach Dave Doeren’s 13th season in Raleigh.

Standout defensive coordinator Tony Gibson left to become the head coach at Marshall. Safeties coach Joe DeForest announced his retirement. Aughtry-Lindsay coached safeties and nickels.

The Wolfpack fired offensive coordinator Robert Anae and promoted quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper to that position. NC State alum Gavin Locklear is the new tight ends coach.

The Wolfpack added D.J. Eliot as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

NC State finished the 2024 season 6-7. It opens next year against East Carolina in Raleigh.

UNC fired head coach Mack Brown at the end of the season and hired Bill Belichick. Belichick’s son, Steve, is expected to become the team’s defensive coordinator. Steve, who spent last season at Washington, is already recruiting for UNC.
