None and done? NFL teams inquiring about UNC coach Belichick, per report :: WRALSportsFan.com

North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick has spent the week visiting high schools across the state to meet with potential recruits, posting some of the interactions to his new social media account.

But NFL teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, are interested in talking to Belichick about a return to the professional ranks — even before he coaches a single game for the Tar Heels.

According to a report from NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, “multiple NFL teams have inquired about whether” Belichik would reconsider his move to college football. Belichick won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots, all with Tom Brady as his quarterback. Brady is now a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, who fired coach Antonio Pierce earlier this week.

Brady has been in touch with Belichick, according to Pelissero.

Belichick’s contract terms, released by UNC at the time of his hiring, include a $10-million buyout if he were to leave the school before June 1. If he were to leave on or after that date, his buyout is $1 million. The buyout is payable within 180 days.

At his introductory press conference, Belichick was asked by WRAL’s Pat Welter what he would say to those worried about a quick return to the NFL.

“I didn’t come here to leave,” Belichick said in, perhaps, the most memorable line of the event.

The Athletic reported Wednesday that Belichick is in New Jersey recruiting and remains committed to UNC. At the time of his hiring in Chapel Hill, ESPN’s Seth Wickersham wrote that “Belichick is ‘disgusted’ in what he believes the NFL had become.”

Belichick’s son, Steve, joined the staff as defensive coordinator, though the move has not been officially announced by the school. He’s added several other coaches and secured a number of commitments from college transfers.

The Raiders are one of six NFL teams seeking a new head coach, joining the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots, who fired Jarod Mayo, Belichick’s replacement, after just one season.

The NFL regular season ended Sunday.
