Quarterback MJ Morris expressed his disappointment about leaving, but acknowledged that NC State is making progress and moving forward. This was reported by WRALSportsFan.com.
MJ Morris, a former quarterback for NC State, expressed his desire to stay with the Wolfpack football team. However, the coaching staff informed him that they were heading in a different direction.
Morris, who played in four games before choosing to redshirt in order to retain a year of eligibility, recently announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. He has confirmed that he has received interest from LSU, Baylor, and Maryland.
Morris shared his thoughts on the transfer portal show hosted by 247 Sports.
“I reiterated to the staff that I am committed and still want to be here,” Morris stated in a meeting following NC State’s win against UNC. “This is where I have chosen to be and where I intend to stay for the next four to five years of my life.”
According to Morris, he had a meeting with head coach Dave Doeren and quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper approximately one week after their initial encounter.
Morris stated that they informed him of their desire to pursue alternate paths, potentially by acquiring a new quarterback to serve as a starter.
“After that discussion, I realized it was time for me to consider different opportunities and move on to a new venture.”
Morris stated that there is no animosity between himself and the program and that he is departing amicably.
Morris played in five games during his first year as a college student before hurting his knee. He stated that the injury necessitated a surgical procedure. He explained that the intention was to delay his eligibility until 2023 and learn from senior transfer player Brennan Armstrong.
Morris stated that he was assured of receiving his redshirt year back, which he and his family were satisfied with.
Morris stated that the strategy was to only participate if Armstrong was unable to play. The NC State offense faced difficulties in the beginning, prompting Doeren to switch to Morris after five games. NC State achieved a record of 3-1 with Morris as the starting player, but he informed the team during that period that he preferred to delay his participation until the following season.
Morris expressed his desire to take a redshirt year in order to gain an extra year of eligibility and further improve as a quarterback. He is determined to reach his ultimate goal of playing in the NFL.
Morris stated that the coaches attempted to dissuade him from his decision. Doeren expressed his surprise at the time that a starting quarterback would choose to not play.
Armstrong played in the last three matches of the year and guided NC State to triumphs over Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina. With a record of 9-3, NC State will take on Kansas State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on December 28th in Orlando.
