Chambers seeking new head football coach 3 years after last title appearance
Julius L. Chambers High School in Charlotte will have a new head football coach in 2025.
Brandon Wiggins resigned from the role a week before Christmas.
He took over the program ahead of the 2022 season. The team was coming off of a loss to Cardinal Gibbons in the 2021 N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state championship game. In the two seasons before that, Chambers won the 4AA state championship game.
Wiggins’ first year resulted in a 9-3 overall record and a trip to the second round. In 2023, the Cougars finished 8-4 after making it to the second round again.
This year, Chambers finished with a 5-5 overall record and missed the state playoffs for the first time since 2007. In the offseason, the program lost multiple assistant coaches and players to other schools. A couple of former Chambers players played a big role on West Charlotte’s 3A championship squad.
Wiggins is a Greensboro native and played at Ben L. Smith High School. He was the head football coach at Smith for four seasons. The Eagles finished with records of 3-8, 5-7, 3-8, and 1-10 under Wiggins. He was an assistant at Mallard Creek High School under Kennedy Tinsley for two seasons before taking the Chambers job.
With an average daily membership of 2,686 students, Chambers is set to be an 8A school after the upcoming NCHSAA realignment.
The school is also looking for a new head baseball coach before the season begins in spring.
