Hunter Jenks leaves Martin County after one season as head football coach
Martin County High School will have a new head football coach again in 2024.
Hunter Jenks informed HighSchoolOT that he has stepped down. His final day will be on Jan. 10. The position was posted on the Martin County Schools’ job openings page on Tuesday.
Jenks has accepted a job in Wake County, closer to where he lives.
In the Gators’ lone season under Jenks, they finished with an 8-4 overall record and made it to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A East playoffs. Martin won a first round game over North Johnston by a score of 47-6. In the second round, Martin’s season and Jenks’ tenure ended with a 42-20 loss against James Kenan.
Before becoming the head coach at Martin, the Wake Forest High and Elon University graduate had an overall record of 42-25 as a head coach between South Johnston, Clayton, and Vance County. With his season at Martin included, he has a 50-29 overall record as a head coach. He has won two conference championships.]
With an average daily membership of 765 students, Martin County is set to be a 3A school after the N.C. High School Athletic Association realigns into eight classifications next year.
Martin County just consolidated its two high schools of Riverside and South Creek.
The old high school in the town of Williamston (where Martin County High School is located) appeared in seven NCHSAA state championship games and won three of them.
