Belichick lands first recruit: East Forsyth 4-star QB Bryce Baker headed to UNC

Bill Belichick has his first win on the recruiting trail.

East Forsyth High School quarterback Bryce Baker announced on Saturday that he will play college football for Belichick at North Carolina.

Baker committed to the Tar Heels in 2023, but decided not to sign earlier this month after Mack Brown was fired. He had a discussion with Belichick on Thursday after the Super Bowl champion coach was introduced as the next UNC coach.

In addition to UNC, Baker was considering offers from LSU and Penn State. He attended Penn State’s game against Maryland on Nov. 30.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Baker is a four-star quarterback who is ranked the No. 13 quarterback in the Class of 2025, according to 247Sports.com.

Baker completed 228-of-305 passes for 3,523 yards and 40 touchdowns with five interceptions in 14 games this past season. He also rushed for 303 yards and six touchdowns on 72 carries.

East Forsyth posted a 13-1 overall record this fall, winning the Central Piedmont 4A Conference title and advancing to the fourth round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs where it lost to reigning state champion Weddington, 37-21.

In his high school career, Baker recorded 6,605 passing yards with 79 touchdowns and 535 rushing yards with nine touchdowns. He was named to the HighSchoolOT All-State Team as a junior.

Baker also plays basketball for the Eagles. Last year, he became a 1,000-point scorer in his high school career. Last year, Baker was an all-district selection by the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association.

UNC’s Class of 2025 recruiting class is currently ranked 81st in the national and 17th in the ACC by On3.com. Baker is the highest-rated player in the class, according to the recruiting website. He’s also the only quarterback.

Baker is not the only in-state commitment for the Heels from the senior class though. Cary offensive tackle Trey Blue has signed with the Heels, and Jacksonville running back Demon June has also committed.

During his introductory press conference, Belichick said he wanted to land the top in-state players, but added he thinks UNC can recruit nationally.

“We want to recruit well in state and in this area … there’s a lot of good football players in North Carolina, the surrounding states, but (UNC) is a national university,” he said. “This is the best public university in the country. Any kid that wants a good education, be in a good football program, be on a great campus, be in a great playing environment, we’ll recruit any kid to come here.”

Aside from the three schools he had narrowed his list to, Baker had many other offers he could have considered, including Appalachian State, Boston College, Duke, Florida, James Madison, Louisville, Maryland, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
