Report: Tulane coach Jon Sumrall tells officials he’s staying with Green Wave :: WRALSportsFan.com

Tulane coach Jon Sumrall has been a hot name to fill open Power 4 jobs in college football this offseason, including with the position at North Carolina, but on Sunday night Sumrall made it clear: he’s not going anywhere.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Sumrall told Tulane officials that he’s “not pursuing any of the open jobs in this cycle.” Sumrall appeared to confirm the report through his account on X.

Sumrall has been a head coach for three seasons. He went 23-4 in two years at Troy and 9-4 this season at Tulane, losing in the AAC championship to Army, 35-14.

In an availability with local reporters, Sumrall was asked if he’s interviewed with UNC. He gave a fiery response.

“Am I here? Do you want me to leave? I get asked about every day right now,” Sumrall said. “People call. They call my agent, I don’t talk to them very often, like very little gets to me, very little. Almost nothing gets to me.”

“Nothing’s getting to me right now, I can say that, nothing’s getting to me. Could that change? I don’t know, if some newspaper tripled your salary, you might go.”

Sumrall added that he’s “very happy” with the exception of Tulane’s back-to-back losses against Memphis and Army.

ACC Football Kickoff

Additional reports, including Sports Illustrated senior write Pat Forde and CBS Sports national college football reporter Matt Zenitz, mirror ESPN’s information, saying Sumrall will stay at Tulane after increased commitment from the University in the football program.

North Carolina fired former coach Mack Brown on Nov. 26 before the team’s final game of the regular season against rival NC State.

Another name that is reportedly connected to the open UNC position is six-time Super Bowl champion and former New England Patriots head coach Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick interviewed for UNC head coach position, report says. Inside Carolina was the first to report his interview with the school.

North Carolina will play in the Fenway Bowl on Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. in Boston, MA. The Tar Heels are matched up against the UConn Huskies. The game takes place inside the historic home of the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park. Tight Ends coach Freddie Kitchens has been named the interim head coach while the search continues.
