Mack Brown’s final game as UNC’s head coach ended with a loss – and a brutal brawl between players.

This happened Saturday at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. The brawl started after an NC State player tried planting their flag at midfield after the game.

Boo Corrigan, NC State director of athletics, and Bubba Cunningham, UNC director of athletics, released a joint statement about the incident:

We’re disappointed by the conduct of some members of our football programs at the conclusion of our game on Saturday at Kenan Stadium. While the game was emotional and the Carolina-NC State rivalry is intense, we must always display good sportsmanship and represent our universities and the Atlantic Coast Conference with respect. We will address this incident with our respective teams.

Here’s what Brown had to say after the game:

“I don’t know what happened in the end; somebody said they tried to plant their flag on our field,” Brown said. “I had said two years ago that was disrespectful.

“I’ve said all week; you need to compete, but you need to do it with composure.”

Team personnel moved in to break it up.

It was just one of several brawls that broke out at games around the country this rivalry weekend.

Saturday at Ohio State, police used pepper spray to break up the players, who threw punches and shoves in the melee that overshadowed the rivalry game.
