Broughton defeats Green Hope, wins coaching battle between former N.C. State teammates
RALEIGH, N.C. – After years of going to battle together on some of college basketball’s biggest stages, Scott Wood and Richard Howell found themselves in unfamiliar territory.
The former N.C. State basketball roommates from the early 2010’s lined up across from one another on Tuesday night as first-year high school coaches.
Wood’s Broughton Capitals used a big third-quarter run to come from behind and defeat Howell’s Green Hope Falcons 73-55.
“We are fighting the same battle as we get used to coaching,” Wood said. “Being able to give back to the community is what it is all about.”
In early April, Green Hope made a splash when it announced Howell, a former First Team All-ACC selection, as its head basketball coach.
The loss at Broughton dropped the Falcons’ record to 2-2, but that is already halfway to their 4-win total from a year ago.
Early in the summer, Wood followed suit when he accepted the head coaching role at Broughton.
The Wolfpack’s career leader in three-point baskets did not stop there. His former teammates Ralston Turner, Staats Battle, and Chris Brickhouse joined the coaching staff— Battle and Brickhouse are both Broughton alumni.
Tuesday’s reunion brought out former N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz, whom Wood credits as a mentor who helped fuel their desire to get into the coaching ranks.
“We have come a long way since being roommates in college… but looking back on it, I don’t think we imagined being in a situation like this,” added Wood.
Broughton’s staff inherited a program that went 11-15 last season. The Capitals are now 3-2 overall following the victory.
It took a big run for the Caps to claim a lead in the third quarter. Their star sophomore Jordan Page led all scorers with 27.
Five early threes gave Green Hope a 19-12 lead through one. In the frame, freshman Knox Frey poured in 11 of his 15 points
His brother Kody added 10 first-half points and Mason Dean downed three second-quarter baskets to help the Falcons hold a 31-27 at the half.
Page had 17 at the break and added six more in the third period. He tied the score at 33-33, and Storm Taylor took over from there.
11 of Taylor’s 16 points were scored in the third. It included a pass from Page that was laid in as the final horn sounded to end the quarter.
Broughton led 48-38 through three and never looked back.
A put-back slam highlighted Christian Outlaw’s big fourth quarter. The senior posted all 10 of his points in the final eight minutes to put a bow on a 25-point period.
In the win, Sean Alston dialed up 3 of Broughton’s 7 three-point baskets.
After the Thanksgiving break, the Capitals stay home to host Cary on December 4.
