Carolina Hurricanes vs. Dallas Stars on FOX 50: Scoring updates :: WRALSportsFan.com
Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes scored five third-period goals and earned a 6-4 win against the Dallas Stars on Monday night at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, securing their eighth consecutive home victory.
The final period featured six goals total, including the late game winner from Martin Necas on the power play. Necas shot deflected off the skate of a Stars’ defender and into the net with 2:07 remaining in the back-and-forth affair.
Andrei Svechnikov added an empty-net goal in the final seconds.
The Hurricanes trailed 3-1 entering the final period, but got goals from Sebastian Aho and Brent Burns early in the period to tie the game. Aho scored his seventh of the season from Seth Jarvis and Dmitry Orlov 70 seconds in the period.
Then, after sustained pressure from the Hurricanes, Burns scored on a blast from the blue line through heavy traffic in front with 16:17 remaining in the period.
On their first power play of the night, defenseman Shayne Gostibehere scored to give the Hurricanes their first lead of the night with 11:51 remaining.
Dallas tied the game again on a goal by Miro Heiskanen whose high shot got past Carolina goalie Spencer Martin. Martin, the team’s third-string goalie, looked shaky at the beginning of the game, but came up with some big saves as the game wore on.
Necas, who drew a high-sticking penalty on Dallas, ended up with the accidental game winner from the right slot.
Martin started after injuries to Frederik Andersen (knee surgery) and Pyotr Kochetkov (concussion). Kochetkov was injured in Saturday’s loss to Columbus and is in the concussion protocol.
Dallas grabbed the lead first, scoring just 18 seconds into the first period when Tyler Seguin put home a rebound by the empty post.
Carolina knotted the game at one on a shorthanded goal by Jarvis off a pass from Aho. Jarvis, who missed the previous seven games with an upper body injury, slid his backhand past Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger.
Dallas regained the lead at 2-1 on a goal by Thomas Harley with 10:15 left in the first period.
The Stars extended their edge to 3-1 in the second period when Carolina defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere lost a battle for the puck deep in his zone. Seguin got the puck and fired it in front of the net where Mason Marchment deflected it home.
The goal came just seconds after Carolina rookie Jackson Blake hit the post on a scoring opportunity.
Monday’s game was on FOX 50. The Hurricanes’ game on Friday against the Florida Panthers will be broadcast over-the-air on WRAL. The game starts at 3 p.m.
It’s part of “Hockey for the Holidays,” a partnership with the Hurricanes and Capitol Broadcasting Company to simulcast two of the team’s FanDuel Sports Network game broadcasts.
