(3) Monroe crushes (14) Burns to advance to 2A third round
MONROE, N.C. — Monroe is rolling on to the third round.
The Redhawks never looked back on Friday in a 56-14 win over Burns in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A football playoffs.
An early punt return by Jayden Caudle set the tone, and Monroe led 14-7 after the first quarter.
The Redhawks (11-0) scored just before halftime to take a 35-7 lead into the break.
Burns (8-4) opened up the third quarter hoping to catch Monroe off-guard with an onside kick, but Clemson commit Jordan Young returned it for a touchdown to make it 42-7 just 13 seconds into the period.
A pick-six by Jamari Clark initiated the running clock with 9:11 left in the third.
Quarterback Kaegan Chambers had two rushing touchdowns and Zion Lindsey added another. Bryson Simpkins, Lindsey, and Nymir Kendall each caught touchdowns.
Burns’ two scores were by Zavion Wilson and Elijah Goodson
