Now that we have the official 2024-25 Average Daily Membership numbers for the N.C. High School Athletic Association schools, we can draw up scenarios for the upcoming conference realignment.

The following is more of a proposal than a prediction. My desire to use as few split conferences as possible may not be shared by the realignment committee or the NCHSAA. HSOT Insiders should stay tuned for another version of this article that will serve more so as a prediction.

My realignment proposal focused on a few key areas:

• The limitation of split conferences, especially in metro areas. The proliferation of split conferences has led to elevation of teams in playoff seeding that should not be elevated.
• Keeping travel times at an hour or below for the vast majority of schools. In the cases where this is not possible, split conferences are used.
• The avoidance of conferences with schools of three different classifications. Unfortunately, this is going to be unavoidable in three different areas in the state. Three schools will be the only member of a class in their conference. These schools would possibly have special criteria to make the playoffs, but that bridge will be crossed when we get to it.
• The removal of the East-West line, allowing teams towards the middle of the state to compete against each other instead of having to drive much longer distances to the west or east.
• Making conferences have at least six teams, as athletic directors have concerns about filling out schedules if there are a limited number of guaranteed conference games.
• A prioritization of keeping football-playing schools together to avoid football-only conferences. So, charter schools that play football are kept with other football-playing schools instead of being placed into a conference made up of only charters.
