FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Only three lower seeds escape round one of the 4A volleyball playoffs with victories.

None were close to a 23-seed like Wake Forest.

The Cougars held on in four to upset 10-seed Pine Forest and set up a second round trip to 7-seed Pinecrest.

After taking a 16-11 advantage in the fourth, Wake Forest weathered a set-ending 11-9 Trojan run to win 25-22.

After winning only 12 combined games over the past two seasons, the Cougars are now 14-10 overall. Wake Forest enters round two winners of 4 of its last 6 matches.
