Duke dominates scrimmage vs. Lincoln in Flagg’s debut :: WRALSportsFan.com
Freshman phenom Cooper Flagg dropped a team-high 22 points, 6 assists and 4 blocks in the 107-56 scrimmage win against Lincoln University.
“Yeah, I mean, it was incredibly special. It was something I dreamed about since I was young, playing college basketball. Dreamed about playing at Duke as well so just getting that experience for the first time, playing against a real opponent was kind of surreal,” Flagg said in the locker room after the game.
Flagg flashed early and often against the Lions, skying in the air for a block off the backboard in the fast break, skying through the air for powerful dunks and finding the open shooter on the perimeter.
“I thought he was himself, I thought even for Coop, he can rebound more, just the decision, there’s so much there for him and I thought it was great for him to get a feel today,” head coach Jon Scheyer said.
Flagg is the consensus number one player in this year’s class and that comes after reclassifying. He’s 17 years old and was originally a member of the 2025 class.
Another freshman to keep an eye out for the Blue Devils is Wisconsin’s own Kon Knueppel. He scored 17 points, going 5/9 from three.
Junior guard Tyrese Proctor was the first player off the bench for the Blue Devils in Saturday’s scrimmage, but head coach Jon Scheyer said not to put too much stock into it. The team is experimenting with lineups before the season gets started. Proctor finished the game with 19 points.
Duke will scrimmage against a different opponent one more time before the regular season begins: Sunday Oct. 27 against Arizona State in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
It’s being called the “Brotherhood Run” charity exhibition game, as former Blue Devil Bobby Hurley coaches the Sun Devils. Proceeds from the event will benefit Duke Children’s Hospital.
