Campbell University announced it will cut funding for some sports from its athletics budget.

In a statement, the school said it evaluated operation expenses and made “strategic decisions” to ensure the future of the school, which is located in Buies Creek.

“We’ve asked for the cooperation of various departments and units, including Campbell Athletics, who are helping us in this goal of institutional strength,” the university said in a statement.

The school said the among the cost-cutting measures are athletic scholarships across multiple sports. The school did not elaborate on which of its 21 athletic teams would face cuts.

“These decisions have caused some anxiety for many,” the university said. “Rest assured, our university and athletics leadership is working to position all our teams for success.”

The Camels sponsor football, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and women’s volleyball and wrestling.

The school’s women’s golf and baseball programs have been the most successful. The baseball team has reached the NCAA Tournament every year it has been held since 2018.

The Camels joined the Colonial Athletic Conference in 2023. Campbell joined the NCAA’s Division I in 1977 and was a charter member of the Big South Conference when it formed in 1983. Campbell joined the Atlantic Sun in 1994 before returning to the Big South in 2011.
