Panthers defense struggles, injuries stack in loss to Bears :: WRALSportsFan.com

Joining us now to talk about the Carolina Panthers 36 to 10 loss. The Chicago Bears is Wral sports anchor, Chris Lee. Chris 36 points defense, particularly in the second quarter. Uh, what, what was your overall takeaway from what you saw from the defensive end of the Panthers? Yeah, it’s bad. Uh, Iiro EO, um, had, has, has not really impressed to me so far in his two years with the Carolina Panthers as their defensive coordinator. Uh, but it can’t all be on him. The Panthers are severely injured. They’re missing so many, uh, you know, starters you have to start with Derek Brown who is out for the year only played in the, the first game of the season. Shaq, uh Thompson’s done for the season and that happened last week, Josey Jewel, uh, is out and then of course, it looked like Jade and Clowney got hurt in today’s game. Jackson Dane Jackson, excuse me, hasn’t played a snap yet. DJ Wham hasn’t played a snap yet. That’s over half of the defense I just named right there, uh, um, that, you know, is having injury issues and that weren’t available today or got injured, uh, during the day today. So, uh, that’s a huge part of it. But outside of that, you see that there’s not a lot of depth for the Carolina Panthers. Uh, we thought the depth was better. It isn’t and it’s showing, uh, and how they’re showing up there. There’s so many missed tackles, there’s so many missed assignments, there’s so much miscommunication. And so even with that, even with the injuries, the missed tackles, the miscommunications, the missed assignments that goes back to coaching. And that’s why I’m also pointing a finger at E ZERO eo, uh, when you look at those injuries because you bring them, I think, I think they are a good point. I believe the Panthers lost at least five starters throughout the course of this game to, to injuries don’t know the severity of said injuries yet, but on the offensive and defensive side, like if you’re the Panthers, how do you continue moving forward with all this? Are you gonna really test some of those young folks over the next few weeks? You’re gonna have to, uh, I don’t think they really have any other choice, uh, but to, to do that and to see what they have, it might be good for you, uh, to see what you have with that and see how they can develop. And it also clears up the picture of what you should go after, uh, to me in the off-season. But here’s another thing, I think the Carolina Panthers should also do, uh, they have a guy by the name of Jordan Matthews. He’s not gonna solve a lot of issues for you, but he’s a veteran wide receiver who made the switch to tight end. Uh, they’ve waived him twice and now he’s on the practice squad. Uh, we saw Tommy Trimble go down with that horrific head injury, uh, where he was knocked out on the field and, uh, then after that, it was up to and Sanders and Felipe Franks while you’re still waiting for Ian, uh Thomas to get back. I think you need to try to call up, uh, somebody like Jordan Matthews. Uh, if, if it’s gonna be more than a week for Tommy Trimble to come back, which it probably should with a head injury, in my opinion. Um And, you know, see what you have with that, but that’s one example where they definitely need to use all resources, including who’s on your practice squad experiment a little bit. Find out what exactly you have on the roster. Um Now, one thing, Chris, so now they are one in four, five games into the season. Obviously, there’s still a lot of football to be played, but it feels like this season’s already been such a roller coaster with the benching of Bryce Young and all these different aspects. Do you assess and change? Just kind of your expectations for what, for what this Panthers team is as they move forward playing, you know, a good Falcons team at home next week. Yeah, I still think that a lot of their destiny is in their hands and that might be naive of me to say, but there’s one thing that I’ll point to, uh, in this game and I’ll go back to after that 38 yard touchdown run from Chuba Hubbard, the next, uh, offensive drive for the Carolina Panthers who was in the backfield for them, Miles Sanders, it wasn’t Chuba Hubbard. Chuba Hubbard had 13 carries for 97 yards today. 13 carries. That’s it. Dave Canalis keeps saying that he’s going to stick with the run and stick with the best players, but he hasn’t done that. And yes, at a certain point, you have to go away from the run when you’re down by so much, um, because you’re gonna throw the ball a little bit more, but in that part of the game, he still went away from the run before they were down, uh, in this game and he, he still just won’t, he, for some reason won’t feed Chuba Hubbard. And to me he needs to have a minimum of, of 20 carries per game. Uh, you saw the output he had with today’s game again, 13 carries for 97 yards. So there’s a few things that Carolina Panthers can do themselves, uh, to, to try to get a little bit better and, and to try to keep that time of possession on their end, maybe even take a, a key from what, you know, Chicago did you know that? No h hurry up thing. And, uh, you know, kind of got their defense a little tired. Maybe there’s other things you can take from other, uh, places but, you know, try to actually out coach the other teams and out scheme the other teams and, and try not to overthink yourselves. And I think that’s one of the instances where Dave Canalis as a play, caller is still trying to grow. He’s out thinking himself. Chuba Hubbard is your best running back. How about use them Hubbard had, uh, 33 yards shy of 100 yards. It would have been his third straight 100 yard game. And last thing here, Chris, it was, the game was over at this point essentially, but we did since the first time of his benching. See Bryce Young come in and lead a drive. I don’t know how much you can take away from a, a snippet of a game like that. But what did you see from Bryson? Was it good to see him get opportunities again after his benching? Well, his first completion, uh, you know, I, I didn’t see exactly how many yards but the ball actually, you know, traveled at least 15 yards in the air and that was a breath of fresh air for me just to see that. Now again, game is out of hand, uh, Chicago’s not playing the tightest defense and just kinda trying to keep everything underneath as much as possible. But, um, you know, for Bryce Young, we haven’t really seen that out of him in a Panthers uniform and we know going back to his Alabama days he can do that. Um, Annie Dalton is still the, the starting quarterback. I don’t wanna, you know, make it seem like, you know, anything has changed with that. We still ride Edie Dalton. I don’t put anything that happened on this game on any Dalton’s shoulders, but maybe Bryce Young is getting a little bit more confidence back that he’s starting to let it fly a little bit. We’ll have to see what end up ends up happening, but it was cool to kind of see that. It’s good to see that he still has a, a very good attitude about things and he’s still being a leader, uh, off the field. So the Panthers are now one and four. They will host the Atlanta Falcons next week in Charlotte WRL sports anchor, Chris Lee, thanks for joining us, Chris.
