No. 17 Watauga stays unbeaten, rolls to victory over No. 24 A.C. Reynolds

BOONE, N.C. — Watauga’s regular-season winning streak is now at 17 games after a 48-21 romp against A.C. Reynolds on a rainy Friday night.

The Pioneers (4-0), who were 10-0 last season and won their last six regular-season games in 2022, were up 13-0 after the first quarter before A.C. Reynolds finally got on the board with 9:25 in the second quarter.

Luke Edmisten got the offense going with a touchdown grab then Maddox Greene ripped through the rain for a touchdown run in the final seconds of the first.

Ely Hamrick got the Rockets on the board with a rushing score of his own, but the Pioneers had an answer. Watauga scored twice more in the quarter – another Greene keeper for six and an Evan Burroughs touchdown – to lead 27-7 at halftime.

Burroughs caught a touchdown to open the second half and Greene went for the hat trick soon after. Watauga led 41-7 with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter. For good measure, Burrough hauled in a long pass for his third of the night to close out the Pioneers’ offensive attack.

A.C. Reynolds scraped together two touchdowns in those final 12 minutes, the final being another Hamrick run with less than four minutes to play.

The Pioneers will host North Davidson next week before going into a bye, followed by Northwestern Conference play.

A.C. Reynolds (1-3) will begin Mountain Athletic Conference play next week. The Rockets’ three non-conference losses are to 4A teams.
