In a game that was delayed for nearly two weeks, Clayton kept its unbeaten record alive with a home win over Holly Springs on Thursday night.

Clayton set the tone in the first quarter as it defeated the Golden Hawks 27-7.

Holly Springs went three and out on its opening drive, then on Clayton’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Aiden Smalls scrambled 54 yards for a touchdown. The Comets led 10-0 after one quarter after Chris Mejia added a 25-yard field goal.

Clayton scored one more touchdown in the second quarter. Smalls connected with Tayvon Evans for a 14-yard touchdown reception with just 25 seconds left in the half.

The Comets led 17-0 at halftime.

Holly Springs got on the board in the third quarter. After its defense forced a Clayton punt, an errant snap was covered up by Holly Springs on the Comets’ 7-yard line. Two plays later, Kingston Davis caught a screen pass from Kaleb Williams for a touchdown.

Clayton did not get in the end zone in the third quarter, but Mejia connected on a second field to give the Comets a 20-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The final score was a 17-yard touchdown run by Smalls to put the game out of reach.

Clayton (3-0) will open Greater Neuse River Conference play next week with a road game at Fuquay-Varina. Holly Springs (1-2) also opens conference play next week with a road game at Middle Creek.

Thursday’s game was originally supposed to be played in Week 2, but was postponed as a line of thunderstorms moved through the state.
