Whiteville defeats SouthWest Edgecombe 3-6, moving on to the quarterfinals in the 2A division.
Whiteville dominated on the road against SouthWest Edgecombe, securing a decisive victory in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A football playoffs on Friday evening.
The Wolfpack maintained their lead throughout the game, ultimately securing a 44-8 victory.
Whiteville’s defense was the first to score, earning a safety towards the end of the opening quarter and giving the Wolfpack a 2-0 advantage. In their next offensive drive, Amari Bass ran for five yards to score and increase Whiteville’s lead to 9-0 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, SouthWest Edgecombe responded with a touchdown by Jhakari Lovely, resulting in a 5-yard run. A successful two-point conversion reduced Whiteville’s lead to 9-8.
However, the momentum shifted to Whiteville after that. Bass made a 20-yard touchdown, increasing the score to 16-8. Then, with only 40 seconds remaining in the quarter, Jamal Faulk scored a 10-yard run, giving Whiteville a 23-8 advantage going into halftime.
The lead continued to increase in the latter half. J.T. Todd ran for eight yards and scored in the third quarter, bringing the score to 30-8 in favor of the Wolfpack.
In the fourth quarter, Whiteville increased their total points by two, with Nallegem Powell scoring a 24-yard touchdown.
Next Friday, Whiteville (11-2) will journey to Elizabeth City to take on Northeastern (2) in the fourth round of the playoffs. Northeastern secured a 62-53 victory over Princeton (7) on Thursday evening in the third round.
The season for SouthWest Edgecombe concluded with a final record of 10-3.
