Steve Aoki, the EDM DJ, views the final frontier as his next challenge.

In the previous year, it was stated that he was listed on the roster for the dearMoon Project, which is set to be the initial civilian journey to the moon. This excursion into outer space aligns with the visionary creator’s ideals, as they are launching “HiROQUEST 2: Double Helix” this Friday.

The initial release in the conceptual series, “HiROQUEST: Genesis” from 2022, features the main character Hiro on a mission to gather enchanted rings in order to rescue the world. The sequel, “HiROQUEST 2: Double Helix,” follows his journey and introduces a new villain. The project also involves collectible cards and Aoki is currently working on a graphic novel to connect the storylines of the albums, set to be released in the beginning of next year.

In addition to the stories, there are also the songs. In terms of sound, “HiROQUEST 2: Double Helix” takes a different path compared to the initial release.

I draw inspiration from my surroundings, which have undergone significant changes. Due to the pandemic, I found myself picking up my guitar and listening to more punk and hardcore music while creating ‘HiROQUEST 1’.

The latest version, however, draws inspiration from his experiences while traveling: It’s a diverse journey that is unified by its unwavering energy, described by Aoki as “much more dance, much more electronic, much more club banger.”

The album also incorporates additional Latin influences, featuring performances from CNCO, Danna Paola, Ángela Aguilar, Tini, and La Joaqui. Each guest artist (including Paris Hilton on a sultry dance track) is linked to a character in the overarching storyline of the concept album.

“Latin culture is now, endemically and fundamentally part of my musical trajectory. It is always going to be a part of every album and project that I do,” he says, adding that “70-80%” of the artists that come through his studio in Las Vegas are Latin artists.

There are some modern interpretations of beloved songs, such as Aoki collaborating with Akon to revamp “Locked Up,” or giving a more intense beat to MGMT’s “Kids.” According to Aoki, the latter is now how he ends his live performances, with a faster tempo of around 40 beats per minute.

These are the outcomes of creative trials in the studio, exploring various styles, cultures, and languages. According to Aoki, an artist must constantly innovate in order to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of music and culture, as falling behind can lead to being replaced.

He has completed numerous physical and medical evaluations for his trip to space, but has not yet started the rigorous training program for astronauts. The launch date has not been determined yet, but he will be ready when it is.

“I have 203 shows planned in my schedule for the year. I was willing to forgo many shows in order to make time for a seven-day trip,” he explains.

Aoki reveals that he is aware of the conclusion to the “HiROQUEST” series, but he chooses not to divulge any further details. After all, it’s the journey that truly matters.
